YANMAR Marine International has given its new VC30 Vessel Control System its first public Cannes appearance, presenting the third generation of the company’s electronic engine-control architecture alongside its diesel and electric propulsion systems. The VC30 is designed to manage YANMAR electronically controlled marine engines while simplifying the number of components and connections required behind the helm.
The system is relevant to both new-build and repower projects because it brings throttle and shift control, engine monitoring, joystick functions and network connections into one integrated platform. YANMAR is positioning the VC30 for sailboats, powerboats and light-duty commercial vessels using its common-rail engine families.
New 4.3-inch optically bonded display
The VC30 uses a new 4.3-inch full-colour TFT display with optical bonding and a quoted brightness of 1,000 cd/m² for visibility in direct sunlight. A red night interface and adjustable dimming are included for low-light use, while the display also carries engine alarms and diagnostic codes.
NMEA 2000 connectivity is built into the system, alongside Ethernet-based multifunction-display connectivity. That allows engine and control data to be shared with compatible onboard electronics rather than requiring a completely separate information environment at the helm.
Fewer ECUs and simpler installation
YANMAR says the third-generation architecture consolidates ECUs and reduces wiring complexity compared with earlier control installations. The system uses a J1939 CAN bus and adds automated setup and engine-type detection, with the aim of reducing commissioning time for boatbuilders, installers and dealers.
The control hardware is rated IPX7 on both front and back, with an operating-temperature range quoted from -30°C to 80°C. Those figures reflect the practical installation environment of exposed or semi-exposed helm stations where control hardware must tolerate water, heat and cold.
Joystick adds thruster and position functions
The new CAN-based joystick incorporates additional control buttons and is designed to work with thrusters and position-keeping functions. YANMAR also lists future-ready support for wireless remote joystick operation and smart-device connectivity as part of the VC30 platform direction.
For owners, the value of the joystick is not simply low-speed steering. Integrating propulsion, transmission and thruster control into one interface can make close-quarters manoeuvring more predictable, particularly on boats where windage and marina space make conventional throttle-and-wheel operation more demanding.
Compatible across YANMAR common-rail ranges
YANMAR lists the VC30 as compatible with its JH-CR, 4LV, 8LV, 6LY-CR, 6LF and 6LT common-rail engine families. That spans installations from relatively compact sailing yachts through larger powerboats, giving the control system a broad role across the company’s leisure-marine portfolio.
At Cannes, YANMAR displayed the VC30 alongside the HVO-approved 4LV150 with SD150 saildrive and the company’s electric E-Saildrive. That combination makes the new controller part of a wider move toward more integrated propulsion and helm systems rather than a standalone electronics launch.
