An event fleet needs support boats that can reach sailors and assist when conditions change. Welsh Sailing has added two VSR powerboats through a programme backed by public sport funding and its own investment.
The powerboats were built in Slovenia and delivered to Wales. They support coaching and racing alongside other equipment being developed through the project.
Funding supports more than one activity
A Welsh Government Capital Grant supported by Sport Wales contributed £64,615, with £30,000 from RYA Cymru Wales across two initiatives. The announcement also describes use of WASZP foiling craft for training and workforce development.
The boats form part of the practical support around participants rather than a new consumer range for sale. Their value will come through repeated use at organised activities.
Safety craft are a specialist tool
An event support boat must be matched to the waters, conditions and operational needs. Crews require training in rescue procedures, equipment and communication as well as ordinary boat handling.
A new hull does not replace careful planning or the decision to postpone a session when conditions demand it. It does provide organisers with equipment designed for their task.
A benefit shared across the fleet
Young sailors and foiling trainees rely on support crews during unfamiliar manoeuvres and more demanding conditions. Reliable powerboats help instructors deliver sessions within their operating plans.
