An outboard or inboard alternator can supply useful energy, but an owner should not assume it can be connected directly to any domestic battery bank. Victron Energy has added a 12/12V 70A Orion XS DC-DC charger to its compact product family.
The model is intended to manage transfer from a 12V source to a 12V service bank. A higher rated charge current must still be considered against the alternator, cables, battery and overall installation.
Up to seventy amps
The new version offers a higher output option for suitable dual-battery systems. It can support recovery after electrical use away from shore power when the equipment is correctly matched.
Real charging depends on engine speed, temperature, cable loss and battery acceptance. A rated output does not guarantee the same current throughout a journey.
Protection around the circuit
Fusing, wire gauge, ventilation and charging profiles all matter, especially if the domestic bank uses a different chemistry. The equipment should be configured to match the battery manufacturer's requirements.
A small boat may have limited spare alternator capacity. Increasing the charger rating without checking the engine system could create problems.
An upgrade with conditions
The Orion XS addition creates another choice for installers designing a dependable power system. Owners should have a current wiring diagram after the work is completed.
