Higher-voltage batteries are becoming more familiar on electric dinghies and boats with demanding electrical systems. Victron Energy has extended its Smart IP43 charger family with 36V/15A and 48V/13A models.
The additions provide dedicated charging options rather than relying on arrangements assembled from several lower-voltage devices. Installation still needs to be designed around the exact battery and the electrical system aboard.
Matching the voltage
The manufacturer describes the units as completing the family across common onboard battery voltages. A dedicated charger can simplify the system when selected for the actual bank.
Voltage alone is not enough to establish suitability. Battery chemistry, capacity and any BMS instructions determine the approved charging profile.
Configuration and monitoring
The Smart IP43 models include VictronConnect Bluetooth configuration. This can make setup more accessible to a technician, but it also means incorrect settings require attention.
Owners should preserve configuration records and protect access to the system. Changes should follow the battery maker's specification rather than guesswork.
A small-boat application
A 48V bank might serve domestic systems or support electric propulsion, depending on the design. Shore power and charging protection should be reviewed as one installation.
