Australian marine safety specialist SOS Marine has launched a new 150N inflatable lifejacket aimed at leisure craft, yachts and commercial vessels. The SOS-6415 combines ISO 12402 approval with automatic or manual inflation and is intended to provide a straightforward everyday option for crews and passengers who need compact wearable flotation.
The new model is designed for users weighing 40kg or more, with an adjustable chest range of 80 to 140cm. SOS Marine says the design builds on more than three decades of work in marine safety and rescue equipment while keeping the product simple enough for routine use aboard smaller boats.
150N buoyancy with automatic or manual operation
The lifejacket is approved to the ISO 12402 150N standard and can be specified for automatic or manual activation. That gives operators a choice of inflation method to suit the way a boat is used, although owners should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the requirements that apply to their particular vessel and operating area.
An external clear indicator window allows the wearer or skipper to check the status of the inflation mechanism before use. SOS Marine also fits an ISO-approved plastic buckle and a splash-resistant stash pocket, bringing practical storage and pre-use inspection features into the basic design.
Designed for routine checks before going afloat
Inflatable lifejackets depend on their inflation mechanism, gas cylinder and bladder being serviceable when required, so the ability to inspect status quickly is useful on boats that carry several units. SOS Marine’s technical guidance also stresses regular checks of the cylinder and inflation system rather than treating an inflatable lifejacket as maintenance-free equipment.
For leisure-boat owners, the launch is a reminder that buoyancy rating is only one part of choosing personal flotation equipment. Fit, intended use, servicing requirements, inflation type and the conditions in which the boat operates all need to be considered together.
Custom branding available for vessels
SOS Marine is offering custom-branded versions carrying a yacht or vessel name as well as the standard product. The company lists a retail price of A$150 for the new base model, although local pricing, tax and distribution costs can vary by market.
The SOS-6415 adds another current option to the 150N inflatable category at a time when many owners are reassessing safety equipment alongside electronics, communications and other onboard upgrades.
