An engine change is rarely just a matter of matching horsepower. Boat owners also have to work around the size of an existing engine bay, cooling arrangements and the access available for future servicing.
Engines Plus has brought the Solé Advance SK-80 marine diesel to the Southampton International Boat Show for its first public boat-show appearance. The model is a Kubota-based four-cylinder unit quoted at 76hp at 2,700rpm.
A compact engine aimed at sailboat installations
The supplier positions the SK-80 for medium-sized sailing boats and professional fishing vessels. That intended market includes repower projects in which a reliable inboard is needed without unnecessarily changing the vessel’s layout.
A quoted output figure does not establish suitability for a particular hull. The engine’s torque curve, gearbox, propeller, shaft alignment and loaded operating displacement need to be considered as an installation package.
Southampton puts the unit in front of owners
The display is at the Engines Plus stand, P136, during the 18–27 September show. Visitors can inspect the unit and discuss applications rather than depend on a photograph or specification sheet alone.
The supplier is also exhibiting Selva Marine outboards alongside the Solé Advance range. The combination reaches different groups of buyers, from owners refreshing an inboard to those considering power for smaller open craft.
Measure carefully before planning a repower
For a boat under 12 metres, access around an engine can be as important as nominal output. An owner should verify physical dimensions, mounting points, weight, cooling water intake, exhaust, ventilation and maintenance clearances against the actual vessel.
The SK-80 therefore belongs on the list of engines to investigate, not a guaranteed drop-in replacement. A competent marine installer can compare its specifications with the existing drivetrain and identify any other work required before ordering.
