A family deckboat in the Florida line-up

The Sea Ray SDX 290 Outboard appears in the 2026 Fort Lauderdale exhibition listings, offering a dayboat design centred on passengers, entertaining and access to the water. The five-day show runs from 28 October to 1 November.

This is a planned display of an existing model, rather than a new-model world premiere. For buyers considering family boating, the opportunity lies in inspecting how the boat handles group seating and equipment storage.

Length, beam and accessible spaces

Sea Ray publishes an overall length of 31 feet 2 inches and a 9-foot beam for the SDX 290 Outboard. The model's wide deck design is intended to support a roomy bow and cockpit without the fully enclosed accommodation of a weekender yacht.

Owners should consider how its size fits the marina or launch ramp they expect to use. When comparing outboard and sterndrive versions, the overall measurements and service arrangements can differ.

Twin Mercury engines under the stern

The standard propulsion is twin Mercury 200-horsepower FourStroke outboards, according to Sea Ray's current US technical sheet. The manufacturer estimates a 28–29-mile-per-hour cruise and 54–55-mile-per-hour top speed under its test conditions.

Performance is influenced by weather, load, trim and propellers, so buyers should not assume the published figures can be reproduced in every situation. The handling characteristics of a twin-engine boat also merit a practical demonstration.

A layout made for entertaining

The SDX 290 Outboard has a standard wet bar, social seating from bow to stern, and available refrigerator and grill options. These details can make a full day more comfortable when passengers want to eat aboard rather than return to a marina for lunch.

The most important evaluation is how easily the facilities can be used without blocking passageways. Families should check where children can sit safely and how towels, lifejackets and equipment can be stored out of the way.

Useful tankage but no guaranteed range

The current specification gives fuel capacity as 131 US gallons and freshwater capacity as 20 gallons. A holding tank is available in some configurations, which should be confirmed with the actual boat rather than assumed from a generic brochure.

Sea Ray publishes a cruising range estimate for its tested version, but it is not a substitute for prudent passage planning. Owners should account for refuelling availability, changing conditions and a suitable reserve.

The difference from a smaller SDX

The show also lists an SDX 270 Outboard, providing a natural opportunity to compare two Sea Ray deckboats. The larger 290 may appeal to people who regularly carry more guests, while the smaller boat could be easier to berth and operate.

Passenger space is useful only when matched by good movement and storage. Buyers should ask to see both layouts and compare boarding, seating, shade and access to service points.

What to confirm before buying

A dealer quotation should identify the engine installation, options, warranty conditions, fees and likely delivery schedule. Online model-year information is useful for research but cannot replace an individual specification for the boat being sold.

For buyers who plan regular water sports or family trips, a realistic trial with typical passengers is a valuable final test. Comfort, predictable handling and local service support matter after the boat-show excitement has passed.
