A technical jacket may be worn for years, while poorly chosen kit can spend most of its life unused. The RYA has joined a sports apparel charter intended to improve the way organisations consider clothing production and waste.
The initiative was launched by 5Thread on 30 March 2026. Its development involved a working group of sports organisations, including the RYA.
Attention extends beyond recycling
The charter addresses structural overproduction, underuse and disposal within sports apparel. Keeping suitable garments in service can require changes in ordering and distribution before an item reaches the waste stream.
The agreement is a commitment to a broader approach, not evidence that every participating organisation has already eliminated waste. Practical outcomes need follow-up and measurement.
Clubs buy clothing as well as boats
A club may order team shirts, instructor uniforms and event garments that are used for limited periods. Thoughtful quantities and longer-lived designs can reduce the risk of surplus stock.
Safety-critical equipment has different requirements from casual apparel. A flotation device or protective item should not be reused when its condition and suitability are uncertain.
Small decisions become routine practice
Choosing durable kit, repairing it when appropriate and passing on usable garments are all actions a sailor can consider. Organisations can support those choices through procurement policies.
