A day focused on practical cruising

The 2026 RYA East Cruising Conference will take place at Royal Hospital School near Ipswich on Sunday 25 October. The programme runs from morning to late afternoon and is aimed at cruising sailors who want practical information rather than a sales-led boat-show format.

Tickets are priced at £35 and include access to a broad series of talks and exhibitors. Subjects range from equipment and emergency response to buying boats and planning longer passages.

Safety and equipment sessions

The agenda includes VHF and DSC use, lifejacket knowledge and rigging checks. Those topics address routine ownership tasks that can be overlooked until equipment is needed in a real incident.

There will also be discussion of incident handling and defibrillators, giving boat owners a chance to think through emergency response before they face pressure on the water. Practical preparation can make a significant difference to how calmly a crew reacts.

Buying, selling and cruising farther

Other sessions cover the process of buying and selling boats alongside accounts of cruising the Baltic and sailing around the UK. That mix lets newer owners learn from both technical specialists and sailors with longer-distance experience.

A session on Westerly yachts adds a class and ownership perspective to the day. Older production boats remain a large part of the UK cruising fleet, so maintenance and buying knowledge continue to be highly relevant.

Exhibitors and boating organisations

Exhibitors are expected to include Fox's Yacht Sales and Chandlery, Suffolk Marine Safety, the RNLI, National Coastwatch Institution and the Cruising Association. Marine police, coastguard representatives and an independent lifeboat organisation are also listed.

Bringing those organisations together gives visitors a chance to ask detailed questions outside the formal talks. For East Coast boaters, the conference provides a concentrated day of ownership, safety and cruising knowledge before the quieter winter period.
