A fishing prize turns into a memorable trip

Raymarine's Earn Your Strikes sweepstakes winner Greg Nechay travelled to Guatemala with his son Scott for a hosted sportfishing trip. The prize included airfare, accommodation, meals and time on the water from Pacific Fins Resort.

Raymarine ambassador and Unfathomed television host George Gozdz joined the pair during the trip. The programme gave the winners a chance to fish one of the eastern Pacific's best-known sailfish destinations rather than simply receive marine equipment as a prize.

A slow start before the action built

The first day was comparatively quiet, showing that even celebrated fishing grounds do not guarantee instant results. Conditions improved sharply as the trip developed and the crew began seeing the numbers for which the area is known.

On the third day alone, the group released 33 sailfish. By the end of the trip the total had reached 58 releases, turning the sweepstakes into a high-intensity offshore fishing experience.

Guatemala's sportfishing appeal

Pacific Guatemala has built an international reputation for billfish, particularly sailfish. Resorts and charter operations in the region combine specialist boats, experienced crews and relatively easy access from shore for visiting anglers.

Catch-and-release practice is central to the modern sailfish fishery. The emphasis is on finding, fighting and releasing fish rather than bringing large numbers back to the dock.

Marine electronics meet experience

For an electronics brand, an on-water prize connects products with the activity they are designed to support. Navigation, radar and sonar are most meaningful to boaters when they are part of a real day at sea rather than only specifications on a display stand.

The trip also highlights the travel side of recreational fishing. For many boat owners and anglers, access to distinctive fisheries can be as strong a reason to travel as the boat or equipment itself.
