A compact camera for more complete onboard awareness
The CAM400 was announced on 30 September 2026 as a compact network camera for powerboats, sailing boats and other marine craft. Raymarine says it can show areas such as the cockpit, aft deck, swim platform, side decks and utility spaces without requiring the helmsperson to leave the driving position.
That makes the camera relevant to leisure boats where a single helm position cannot provide a clear sightline to every corner of the vessel. A rear-facing installation can also provide an additional view while reversing, while another camera can be positioned to monitor passengers or activity on deck.
How the Axiom integration works
Rather than using a separate domestic-style monitor, the CAM400 is designed to work through compatible Raymarine Axiom multifunction displays already used for navigation and onboard systems. This keeps the video feed within the marine electronics environment and gives owners another use for displays that are already installed at the helm.
Raymarine describes the camera as a full-HD day and night unit, so the aim is useful monitoring across changing light conditions rather than daylight-only viewing. Actual performance will still depend on mounting position, network configuration, available display compatibility and the lighting conditions around the monitored area.
Installation decisions matter on smaller boats
On a leisure boat, the most valuable camera position will vary considerably with layout and use. Owners of open sports boats may prioritise the stern and bathing platform, while cabin boats may gain more from covering a blind quarter, machinery space or an aft cockpit hidden from the helm.
A marine camera also needs to be treated as part of the vessel's electrical and network installation rather than as a simple accessory. Cable routing, weather exposure, field of view and the effect of spray or glare should all be checked before deciding where the camera will provide the most useful picture.
Why the CAM400 matters for everyday leisure boating
Video monitoring is increasingly practical on sub-12-metre boats because modern multifunction displays already combine navigation, sonar, radar and connected-system information. Adding a compact camera can therefore improve situational awareness without forcing the owner to dedicate scarce dashboard space to another screen.
The CAM400 does not replace normal lookout responsibilities or direct visual checks when manoeuvring, but it can provide another useful source of information. For owners already using compatible Axiom equipment, the important questions are installation location, network compatibility and whether the added view solves a genuine visibility problem aboard their particular boat.
