RAD Propulsion has launched a finance-leasing programme for its RAD 40 electric outboard, offering a complete propulsion package from £995 per month. The programme is intended to reduce the upfront cost of moving an existing or new boat to electric propulsion.
The lease package includes the 40kW outboard, battery, steering wheel, throttle, control units and cables configured to suit the individual vessel. RAD says the system is aimed at leisure and commercial craft including RIBs and powerboats.
Three-, four- and five-year terms are available
Customers can choose finance terms of three, four or five years, with the final monthly payment depending on the boat and selected battery package. The starting figure of £995 per month is therefore a headline entry point rather than a universal fixed price.
RAD says customers own the drive system at the end of the finance term under the new programme. Prospective users should still compare the total financed cost with outright purchase and other funding options before deciding which route is appropriate.
RAD 40 delivers 40kW continuously
The RAD 40 is rated at 40kW continuous output and operates at 350 to 450 volts. The drive weighs about 100kg and uses integrated electro-hydraulic steering with up to 180 degrees of movement.
Short- and long-shaft versions are available, and the system can accept propellers up to 350mm in diameter. Battery size remains one of the most important decisions because it determines both range and a large part of the final installation cost.
Leasing targets the electric-conversion barrier
Electric outboards can reduce local noise and exhaust emissions, but the purchase price of the complete propulsion and battery system remains a barrier for many owners. Leasing spreads that capital cost across predictable monthly payments instead.
The programme was announced around the 2026 Southampton International Boat Show as the industry continues experimenting with different routes into electric propulsion. Owners considering a conversion should also assess charging access, cruising range and installation requirements before focusing on the monthly figure alone.
