The major upgrade of Mornington’s Schnapper Point boat ramp is approaching its scheduled completion at the end of September 2026. The Victorian project is intended to make launching easier at one of Port Phillip’s popular recreational-boating access points.
Construction began in April and required closure of the car park and boating facility while substantial waterside work was carried out. The programme combines a wider ramp with new jetties and improvements to the surrounding manoeuvring areas.
Wider ramp and new jetties reshape the facility
The project widens the existing launching area and replaces access structures used by crews before and after launching. New jetties are designed to provide more practical boarding and vessel-handling space.
Improved manoeuvring areas should also make it easier for tow vehicles and trailers to line up with the ramp. That can reduce delays at busy times when several boats are launching or retrieving in quick succession.
All-abilities access forms part of the design
Better Boating Victoria has included all-abilities access within the project rather than treating accessibility as a separate later addition. The aim is to make the facility easier to use for a broader range of boaters and visitors.
Accessible infrastructure can include gradients, pathways and boarding arrangements that work for users with reduced mobility. The practical details matter because a nominally accessible ramp can still be difficult to use if the route to the water is poorly connected.
Reopening depends on final construction progress
The current programme runs through 30 September 2026, although completion remains subject to construction and weather conditions. Boaters should confirm the latest facility status before towing a boat to Schnapper Point.
