A volunteer recognised in Wales
Mick Renny has received a Welsh Sailing Impact Award for nearly a decade of service on the RYA Cymru Wales Performance Sub Committee. The association's 17 September report also records his work at Fishguard Bay Yacht Club, where he served on the management committee and as rear commodore.
The award was presented by Sarah McGovern, RYA Cymru Wales chief operating officer, in recognition of the committee work underpinning youth and junior racing. It is an award for sustained voluntary service rather than a competition result.
From safety cover to committee decisions
Renny began volunteering as his son Tom became involved in Optimist sailing with Teifi Boating Club in Cardigan, later progressing through Topper and ILCA classes. He moved from helping provide safety cover at local events to supporting national activity and joining the performance committee around 2017.
His background as a youth worker informed an interest in widening opportunities for young sailors. The RYA describes his contribution to difficult decisions, financial support and maintaining performance pathways for a comparatively small sailing population.
The less visible side of racing
Committee roles may not be as visible as helming or coaching, yet they influence how clubs organise races, allocate resources and support participants. Renny's contribution highlights the importance of the people who help young sailors develop beyond their first lessons on the water.
The association points to participants who advanced through Welsh sailing programmes into international racing and professional opportunities. Those individual journeys have many influences, and the award recognises Renny's support rather than claiming one volunteer alone produced their success.
