Applications open for next environmental programme

MarineShift360 has opened applications for the 2027 Impact Accelerator, a ten-month programme for marine businesses aiming to measure and reduce environmental impacts. The initiative is delivered by Marine Futures and supported financially by 11th Hour Racing.

The organisation says participation is free for selected applicants. It is looking for practical improvement projects rather than environmental promises without a measurable plan.

Lifecycle assessment provides the evidence

A central part of the programme is lifecycle assessment, which measures the environmental effects of materials, production, use and end-of-life processes. This can help a boatbuilder assess whether a design change actually reduces impacts instead of merely shifting them to another stage.

Participants receive access to the MarineShift360 tool and expert support covering sustainability strategy, materials, manufacturing and supply chains. Assessments must still use reliable information about real products and operating conditions.

Smaller craft and equipment makers can benefit

Marine Futures welcomes proposals involving lower-impact vessels, recyclable materials and circular business models. Recreational boat manufacturers and suppliers may be able to investigate specific problems such as composite waste or propulsion choices.

Previous work has included RNLI lifeboat operations, electric hydrofoils and recyclable composites. Those examples demonstrate programme scope but do not imply that every previous experiment is ready for large-scale commercial use.

Internships and industry connections included

Successful applicants can receive a funded internship and opportunities to collaborate with technical specialists and other participating organisations. The programme is intended to produce case studies with lessons useful to a wider marine audience.

Applicants must allocate an internal team and commit time to the project. Support is not simply a grant with no reporting requirements, and the organisers expect outcomes to be shared publicly.

Application deadline falls at year-end

Marine Futures has set 31 December 2026 as the application deadline. Shortlisted applicants are due to be interviewed during January, with final selections expected before February's programme start.

Businesses should review the official eligibility guide and application form before applying. The launch creates an opportunity for industry experimentation, not an automatic certification of sustainability.
