A new group takes to the water

Cramond Boat Club launched its Women on the Water programme with support from RYA Scotland. Around a dozen participants joined the first session using club training boats and members’ dinghies.

The initiative was intended for women with different levels of sailing experience. It was a local club launch, not a new national training qualification.

Coaching from two instructors

RYA Scotland supported the session with instructors Suzie Sturrock and Suzie Homer. Their role was to help participants regain confidence or begin learning in a supportive setting.

Instruction matched the group’s experience rather than asking beginners to manage demanding conditions alone. Proper preparation remains essential at every later session.

Finding confidence together

The published account describes practice with boat handling and a group exercise that brought the dinghies together. Shared progress formed an important part of the evening.

A social group can make it easier for a newcomer to return and keep learning. Individual competence still grows through regular practice and suitable supervision.

Building a programme beyond launch day

RYA Scotland presents the event as the start of a wider opportunity at Cramond. Future sessions will depend on the club and the people helping run them.

The original RYA release and photograph document the participants and local setting. Interested sailors should check the club’s current dates and booking requirements.
