Support for the club workforce
RYA Northern Ireland reported the results of its We’re All In volunteering initiative in June. The small-grants programme was designed to help clubs bring new helpers into their seasonal activities.
The focus was recruitment, recognition and practical support rather than a funding scheme for new boats. Grant terms and future availability need independent confirmation.
Six organisations participated
Participants included Donaghadee, Ballyholme, County Antrim, Portaferry and Royal Ulster yacht and sailing clubs, as well as Belfast Lough Sailability. Their individual activities reflected different local priorities.
A small organisation may need support with volunteer welcome arrangements as much as specialist race management. Each participating group chose work appropriate to its circumstances.
Making the invitation visible
The programme encouraged clubs to make volunteering a clear part of their season planning. Parents, existing members and people new to club life can all contribute where roles are suitable.
Training and oversight remain especially important for work involving safety, children or specialist equipment. An introductory activity should not place an untrained person in sole charge.
Lessons for future seasons
The RYA feature provides examples for clubs reviewing how to retain and thank their helpers. Consistent communication can matter as much as a single recruitment campaign.
