Equipment added to the pathway
Welsh Sailing announced eight new double-handed dinghies through a Sport Wales-backed project. The £68,284 grant contributes to a total project cost of £75,784.
The equipment is intended to remove some of the up-front expense facing young people entering competition. This is a fleet investment rather than a commercial model launch.
Different boats for different stages
The programme includes a 29er and a 420 for youth sailors, plus six RS Feva dinghies for juniors. Trailers are part of the announced equipment package.
The 29er and 420 are intended for loan to developing sailors, while the RS Feva fleet supports training and team racing. Use and allocation will depend on Welsh Sailing’s programme.
The cost beyond the boat
Training, travel, events and accommodation can add to the cost of youth participation. The association’s pathway review identified the purchase of suitable boats and kit as a further barrier.
Loan craft can redirect some family spending towards experience and development. They do not remove every other cost or guarantee a place in an international team.
A longer-term training asset
Having a fleet available to several sailors can make organised sessions easier to deliver. The governing body can also make equipment available for different stages of progression.
