Two volunteers recognised
RYA Northern Ireland presented Impact Awards to Aidan Pounder and Rob Milligan of Ballyholme Yacht Club. The July report celebrates the work that helps racing and other club activities take place.
Volunteer recognition is important because much of the organising happens away from a racecourse. The awards concern the recipients’ documented contributions rather than a ranking of sailing clubs.
Racing organisation behind the scenes
The RYA credits Pounder with giving extensive time to club racing and major events across Northern Ireland. Planning, coordination and support can determine whether a busy regatta runs smoothly.
A visitor may only see the boats on the water, but organisers also manage people, courses and safety arrangements. Those roles require skills distinct from racing performance.
A wider club contribution
The association also highlighted Milligan’s work and the value of sustained service at Ballyholme. The two awards reflect different contributions within one club community.
Such volunteer pathways are open to people with a range of experience, depending on the roles available. A club should provide appropriate training and oversight for safety-critical duties.

Clubs planning their next season can review how new helpers are introduced, supported and recognised. Administrative work, maintenance and event assistance all provide ways to contribute.
