An airport-linked marina moves into the global spotlight
Leisure Boat Guide reports this wider marine industry development for small-boat owners, operators and suppliers. Equipment, berthing and operating conditions may differ substantially from those of larger yachts. Airport Authority Hong Kong has promoted its proposed SKYTOPIA Yacht Bay at the Monaco Yacht Show, bringing the scheme before international marina operators, developers and investors. Its official 25 September 2026 announcement records meetings with more than 100 senior industry leaders, the largest overseas SKYTOPIA campaign since expressions of interest opened in April.
The update moves beyond the initial project announcement by detailing the Monaco outreach and the next procurement milestones. It does not indicate that the marina is currently open or that its planned berths can already be reserved.
A waterfront development designed around air access
The Airport Bay Marina is planned with around 500 berths for vessels up to 100 metres, according to the Airport Authority's earlier official project description. A marine resort with direct marina access, a promenade and aquatic leisure facilities forms the wider Yacht Bay concept close to Hong Kong International Airport.
The proximity of aviation, land transport and berthing facilities is central to the scheme's appeal for international yacht visits. It could simplify the relationship between crew changes, guest arrivals and a marina stay, subject to the eventual facilities and operational rules.
The next development stages are not yet complete
The authority says a tender exercise is planned for 2027 and the first phase of the marina development is expected in 2028/29. The current expression-of-interest exercise seeks expertise in marina operations, yacht services, hospitality, tourism and complex waterfront development rather than advertising a finished facility.
Those are projected dates, not guarantees of completion. A separate August development notice concerned proposed dredging, breakwaters and waterside works, with detailed approvals and contractor arrangements remaining important to the final timetable.
What was discussed in Monaco
Chairman Fred Lam led the delegation, with Cissy Chan presenting the Yacht Bay concept and its commercial opportunities. The authority also attended the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous and Asia-Pacific Superyacht Night and visited Port Hercule to study the facilities and operations of an established yachting centre.
