An introduction in Donaghadee
Pupils from Donaghadee Primary School took part in an RYA Northern Ireland programme at Donaghadee Sailing Club. The initiative was supported by approximately £86,000 from the PEACE PLUS Change Makers fund.
The May report describes a six-week format for young people from different community backgrounds. It is an organised youth programme, not a commercial marina development.
Fifteen hours of shared activity
Each programme is planned to provide fifteen hours of activity for young people aged ten to eighteen. Sessions include sailing alongside water-safety work and discussion of community and maritime heritage.
The Swim Safe element is delivered in partnership with the RNLI. Having a structured programme allows organisers to connect social learning with practical activity.
Connections beyond one club
The programme aims to bring participants together through experiences they can share. Confidence and friendship are among the outcomes it is designed to support.
These are programme objectives, not a guarantee about every child’s experience. The organisation will need to assess delivery and participation as the initiative continues.
A community use for marine skills
Sailing clubs can provide a setting for learning that extends beyond handling a boat. The Donaghadee project links access, safety and shared local experience.
