A route for serviceable sailing kit
The RYA has partnered with kitround to help rehome pre-owned sailing clothing and reduce unnecessary disposal. The circular sports marketplace specialises in redistribution, resale and donations.
The July announcement concerns usable technical kit rather than a replacement for safety equipment that is damaged or beyond its service life. Donations must meet the receiving organisation’s condition requirements.
Collection points at events
The RYA plans collection opportunities at events such as its Dinghy and Watersports Show and iQFOiL championships. Garments named in the programme include wetsuits, drysuits, boots, gloves and spray tops.
Sailors can also contact kitround directly about donations. Specific event arrangements and accepted items should be confirmed before arriving with bags of equipment.
How the arrangement works
Suitable items are intended for a dedicated RYA area within the kitround platform, keeping clothing in circulation for longer. Proceeds from donated equipment are directed to the RYA Foundation.
Extending the use of a garment can help another sailor enter the sport without buying everything new. A purchase still calls for checks on fit, waterproofness and age-appropriate suitability.
Practical value for clubs
Clubs commonly accumulate spare clothing as members grow or change disciplines. An organised collection route can make it easier to find equipment a new participant can use.
