A coastal route with a purpose
Monty Halls has outlined the Coastal Legacy Expedition, a British circumnavigation planned to start in spring 2027. He intends to visit 49 ports and harbours aboard the 34-foot ketch Sobek.
The route will cover England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, connecting local sailing communities along the way. It is a planned project, not a voyage that has already been completed.
What the Big Blue Bag records
The project uses Big Blue Bag citizen-science kits to measure sea-surface temperature, microplastics, coastal debris and seabird populations. Schools, sailing clubs and other groups will be able to take part.
Organisers want the information entered into an app so that local observations continue after the yacht has sailed on. The recorded measurements still need to be interpreted according to the project methodology.
Making use of local clubs
A major part of the plan is engagement with coastal communities rather than merely visiting harbours for filming. Halls also plans a follow-up in 2028 to share results with participating places.
Small-boat owners and club volunteers have a practical reason to follow the initiative. Local participation can extend the value of a circumnavigation beyond a single passing visit.
Partners and practical involvement
British Marine says the organisers are inviting marine businesses to assist with logistics, equipment, education and media work. Documentary and digital updates form part of the proposed programme.
