A shared platform rather than a one-boat project

The two groups formed their joint venture to pool engineering expertise, development work and production volumes around a common electrification platform. JOOOL combines propulsion, energy storage, conversion, management, interfaces and support services in a system intended to be adapted across different boat sizes and operating profiles.

Standardisation matters for leisure boating because electric installations have often been developed model by model, making components, servicing and costs harder to scale. A shared platform could simplify integration for builders while giving owners a more consistent service and parts ecosystem.

The target is 10 to 15 percent of sailing by 2030

Groupe Beneteau and Fountaine Pajot say the partnership aims to contribute to electrifying 10 to 15 percent of the global sailing market by 2030. The current rollout covers low- and high-voltage configurations and is being expanded across both groups' brands and production sites.

That is an industry target rather than a forecast that every market will adopt electric propulsion at the same pace. Boat size, sailing pattern, charging access, battery cost and owner expectations will continue to influence where hybrid and electric systems make the strongest practical case.

Eight brands and outside shipyards are involved

The programme currently spans eight brands: Beneteau, Jeanneau, Lagoon, Lagoon Signature, Excess, Fountaine Pajot, Fountaine Pajot Yachts and Dufour. Groupe Beneteau has four models involved and Groupe Fountaine Pajot has ten, while Leopard Catamarans, RM Yachts and Chantier de l'Arsenal are also partnering with JOOOL.

Opening the platform beyond the two parent groups is significant because higher component volumes can help standardise interfaces and spread development costs. For owners, the long-term benefit would be a wider service network and fewer proprietary one-off systems if the technology gains broader adoption.

Remote support forms part of the ownership proposition

JOOOL says it already works with 19 after-sales service centres worldwide and uses onboard satellite and cellular connectivity for remote monitoring. Support teams can review alarms and operating history, change certain settings and deploy software updates when the boat has a connection.

Remote diagnostics can reduce downtime, especially for cruising boats far from the original dealer, but owners should still understand what happens when connectivity is unavailable. Local technical competence, manual isolation procedures and clear emergency operation remain important parts of any electrified propulsion installation.
