NMEA members select the IC-M510 EVO
The National Marine Electronics Association lists the IC-M510 EVO as its 2026 Product of Excellence winner for VHF Radio. The awards are voted on by NMEA members and certified marine-electronics installers, putting emphasis on equipment used and supported in real installations.
For leisure boat owners, VHF remains one of the core safety and communication systems aboard. A recognised fixed radio can sit at the centre of routine marina calls, bridge-to-bridge communication and digital distress functions when correctly installed and registered.
DSC and NMEA 2000 are built in
Icom specifies Class-D digital selective calling and native NMEA 2000 connectivity in the IC-M510 EVO. That allows the radio to exchange compatible navigation and position data with other networked equipment without requiring the separate interface used by the earlier M510 installation.
The radio also includes a dedicated distress control and an integrated GNSS receiver. Owners still need a valid MMSI and the correct regional licensing arrangements before relying on DSC features in normal operation.
Smartphone control extends communication around the boat
Icom's WLAN function allows compatible smart devices to operate key radio functions away from the main control head. On a small cruiser or fishing boat, that can make the radio easier to use from different parts of the cockpit without adding another full-size fixed station.
Wireless control should be treated as a convenience rather than a substitute for a properly installed primary VHF. Power supply, antenna condition and access to the main set remain important if the boat loses local wireless connectivity.
A practical fit for sub-12-metre boats
The IC-M510 EVO is compact enough for many leisure-boat helm stations while still providing a colour display, active noise cancelling and hailer functions. Icom also offers an AIS-receive version, which can add another layer of situational awareness when integrated with the rest of the navigation system.
For an upgrade, owners should check available panel space, antenna cabling, network connections and speaker requirements before purchase. A professional installation can also confirm that DSC position data and any connected multifunction display are exchanging information correctly.
