Icom brings a colour display to the fixed-mount VHF
Icom America has released the IC-M430 fixed-mount marine VHF radio, combining a colour display with integrated GPS and Class D DSC. The screen provides day, dark and night viewing modes so channel and status information remain readable in different helm-lighting conditions.
The radio delivers 25-watt audio through its speaker and uses active noise cancelling on both received and transmitted audio. An optional hailer can use the same amplifier, while AquaQuake is designed to clear water from the speaker grille after exposure to spray or immersion.
Compact installation targets crowded modern helms
The IC-M430 is designed with a relatively shallow body to make replacement and new-build installation easier where dashboard space is limited. It can be flush-mounted, bracket-mounted or front-mounted depending on the structure and access available behind the helm panel.
Icom also allows the microphone to connect from the rear of the radio, which can help installers keep cabling away from the front face. An optional CommandMic supports a second operating station and intercom use, giving flybridge or cockpit users access without requiring another complete radio.
NMEA networking supports wider bridge integration
The radio supports both NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183-HS, allowing position and DSC information to move between compatible onboard electronics. When paired with a compatible Icom AIS transponder, a user can select a vessel and initiate a DSC call without manually entering its MMSI.
For larger yachts the IC-M430 is most likely to appear on tenders, chase boats or secondary operating positions, but the underlying trend is wider. Communications equipment is becoming more closely integrated with navigation networks while installers continue to demand smaller hardware footprints and simpler helm layouts.
