A substantial change at a Solent refuelling stop

Owners using Gosport Marina for dayboat or cruising-boat refuelling need to plan around a proposed six-week closure during an upgrade to the fuel facility. The newly announced development may be relevant to recreational boat owners, manufacturers and service businesses, depending on the type of boat and its cruising plans.

The operator has warned that its Gosport fuel pontoon will close to all vessels for approximately six weeks while work is carried out. Actual reopening depends on weather and construction progress, so boat owners should verify current arrangements rather than assume a fixed resumption date.

Why the new storage capacity matters

Gosport currently supplies around 8,000 litres of unleaded petrol and 25,000 litres of marine diesel a week, according to Premier Marinas. The comparatively small existing petrol tank means the marina depends upon regular deliveries, making stock resilience particularly important during busy boating periods.

A 30,000-litre unleaded tank will provide a greater operational buffer and require fewer road-tanker movements, potentially reducing the risk that refuelling becomes unavailable when several boats arrive in quick succession. The project will also add fuel pipework and an interceptor tank, extending the work beyond a simple tank replacement.

Premier also plans a fuel-polishing system for the refurbished marine diesel tank. Fuel quality is important to yacht reliability, especially for boats whose engines and generators may operate intermittently, although owners remain responsible for proper tank maintenance and filtration on board.

An alternative during the closure

Premier says Port Solent Marina will provide alternative refuelling during the closure period. Annual berth holders can continue to use Premier Advantage arrangements there, which the operator describes as offering petrol and marine diesel at its purchase-and-dispense cost.

External vessels may also use Port Solent subject to the marina’s normal operating conditions. Anyone planning a route through Portsmouth Harbour should check fuel availability, depth, access restrictions and operating arrangements before entering rather than assuming another Premier location offers identical facilities.

The closure affects one service at Gosport, not necessarily all berthing and yard operations. Nevertheless, the location is also linked to Endeavour Quay and the surrounding boat-service economy, so charter operators and yacht managers should account for changes to refuelling logistics in their operational schedules.

Planning fuel stops with confidence

A 12- to 24-metre motor yacht may require substantial fuel for a passage along the south coast, and scheduling around a temporary pontoon closure is a practical necessity rather than a minor inconvenience. Even sailing yachts with smaller engine loads may need reliable diesel access before a long departure or winter move.

Marina manager Jonathan Walcroft has linked the expansion to growing local demand and the aim of reducing interruptions. The company’s announcement provides useful advance notice, but real-time confirmation will still be necessary once construction begins, particularly if weather delays the works.

The target is a more resilient fuel service for Gosport and Premier’s wider Portsmouth Harbour customers after completion. In the meantime, boat owners should treat 19 October as the start of a planned temporary closure and organise alternative fuel stops while the marina’s equipment is being upgraded.

Practical considerations for leisure boat owners

Whether purchasing a new boat or updating existing equipment, customers should check the detailed specifications, current availability and after-sales support before making a decision. Published examples and planned future facilities may not match the circumstances of every marina, boat or installation.

A private dayboat or smaller cruiser has different needs from a professionally crewed yacht. Buyers can use the manufacturer or organiser’s official information as a starting point while obtaining the individual service, safety and cost details that matter to their intended use.
