Reactor 40 takes the 2026 autopilot category
The NMEA has named Garmin's Reactor 40 Hydraulic Corepack with SmartPump v2 as its 2026 Product of Excellence winner for autopilots. Voting comes from marine-electronics professionals and certified installers, placing the award within the community that specifies, installs and services these systems.
For leisure-boat owners, an autopilot can reduce steering workload on longer passages and help maintain a consistent course. It remains an aid rather than a substitute for an alert helm, particularly in crowded water, poor visibility or close to hazards.
SmartPump v2 is built for hydraulic steering
Garmin positions the SmartPump v2 package for a broad range of hydraulic steering systems. The pump is paired with the Reactor 40 course computer and uses solid-state attitude and heading sensing to respond to vessel movement while following a commanded course.
Correct pump sizing and hydraulic installation are essential. Owners considering a retrofit should identify the steering cylinder volume, hose arrangement and available mounting space before selecting an autopilot package or beginning installation.
Network integration brings control to the helm
The Reactor 40 can integrate with compatible Garmin chartplotters and dedicated autopilot displays, allowing course changes and steering functions to be controlled from the helm network. Compatible navigation functions can also support route following when the system is correctly configured.
Networked control does not remove the need for manual steering to remain immediately available. Garmin's installation guidance stresses that users should be ready to regain control and should learn the system in open, hazard-free water before depending on it during normal cruising.
A useful upgrade for capable small cruisers
Hydraulic autopilots are increasingly relevant to outboard-powered cruisers and larger fishing boats within the sub-12-metre market. They can be particularly valuable where owners spend long periods running at steady speed between fishing grounds, islands or coastal destinations.
The final installation should be tested for heading accuracy, pump response and safe manual override. Power supply, NMEA 2000 integration and steering-system condition should also be checked so the autopilot is not being added to an already marginal hydraulic system.
