A compact screen for crowded small-boat helms

The GMI 40 uses a 4.3-inch high-resolution colour LCD with edge-to-edge glass and a touchscreen interface. Garmin has designed it to sit alongside GPSMAP chartplotters without taking up the space required by a larger multifunction display.

That makes the instrument relevant to smaller leisure boats where helm space is limited but owners still want a dedicated view of key vessel information. A separate data display can also leave the main chartplotter free for navigation or sonar.

NMEA 2000 brings multiple systems onto one display

The instrument connects to an NMEA 2000 network and can present data generated by compatible onboard sensors and systems. Depending on the boat, that can include depth, speed through the water, wind, heading, engine information and selected environmental readings.

Owners can configure pages around the information they use most often rather than relying on a fixed layout. That flexibility is useful on boats that serve several roles, such as fishing one weekend and coastal cruising the next.

Touch control replaces older button-heavy layouts

Garmin has moved the interface to a touchscreen, allowing users to swipe between data pages and change fields directly on the display. The company says the layout is intended to remain simple to read while giving users control over how individual data sets are presented.

On a compact helm, reducing physical buttons can help keep the installation visually cleaner. The practical test will still be how easily the screen can be operated when the boat is moving, particularly in wet or rough conditions.

The GMI 40 joins Garmin’s wider 2026 marine update

The new instrument was announced alongside several other Garmin marine products for the 2026 season, including updated audio equipment and the SmartDrive sailboat autopilot. Together, the releases show a continued push toward networked helm systems rather than isolated instruments.

For leisure boat owners already using NMEA 2000, the GMI 40 provides another way to make use of data that may already be available on the network. Final compatibility depends on the sensors, engines and other equipment fitted to each boat.
