Garmin and Divers Alert Network have introduced a new connection between Garmin Response and DAN's specialist dive-emergency services. Active DAN members using an inReach device and active satellite plan can add their DAN member ID to the Emergency Notes section of their inReach account.

If a dive-related emergency occurs and an SOS is triggered from the surface, Garmin Response can coordinate the field response and share relevant details with DAN. The arrangement is intended to join general emergency coordination with dive-specific medical expertise rather than leaving the two processes disconnected.

Garmin Response handles the field emergency

Garmin says its 24-hour response centre communicates with the user, listed emergency contacts, search-and-rescue organisations and other available local resources after an SOS. The team can provide updates until the incident is resolved and confirm when assistance is on the way.

DAN can then contribute specialist dive-medicine advice, help identify suitable medical or hyperbaric facilities and coordinate with treating providers. Depending on a member's benefits or insurance coverage, DAN may also assist with medical transport, evacuation and related logistics.

Useful for boat-based diving

Many recreational dives begin from RIBs, centre consoles and other small leisure boats, making communications and emergency planning relevant well beyond dedicated dive vessels. Satellite messaging can be particularly useful when mobile-phone coverage is limited offshore or around remote launch sites.

Membership and subscription conditions still matter

The collaboration does not remove the need for an active inReach satellite subscription, and Garmin notes that satellite devices are regulated or prohibited in some jurisdictions. DAN's specialist support in this workflow also depends on active membership, so boaters and divers need to configure their account information before an emergency occurs.
