From Seliö Boats to large-scale production
Finnmaster has revisited the career of Niilo Seliö, whose work connected powerboat racing, production engineering and the growth of several well-known Finnish leisure-boat brands. Seliö founded Seliö Boats in 1997, initially producing Yamarin models before the operation developed into a significant contract boatbuilding business.
The company built thousands of fibreglass boats over the following years and accumulated experience in repeatable production, quality control and manufacturing efficiency. That background is important because modern small-boat brands depend as much on consistent series production as they do on individual design ideas.
Finnmaster became part of the story
Seliö Boats began producing Finnmaster models in 2015, deepening the relationship between the two businesses. Three years later Seliö Boats and Oy Finn-Marin Ltd merged to form Finnmaster Boats Oy, bringing the production knowledge of both organisations under one structure.
Finnmaster says the manufacturing discipline developed through Seliö’s operation remains part of the group behind Finnmaster, Husky and Grandezza boats today. Those ranges cover several important LBG segments, from aluminium utility craft and smaller console boats to larger day cruisers that still remain below the 12m boundary.
A useful reminder of how boat brands evolve
Boatbuilding history is often presented through model names and styling changes, but the less visible production story can be equally influential. Factory processes, moulding expertise and the ability to build consistently at volume can determine whether a design succeeds long after its launch publicity has faded.
Finnmaster’s account also links Seliö’s industrial contribution with his role in Finnish powerboat racing, including the development of the GT10 concept for younger competitors. The result is a broader picture of how racing, manufacturing and recreational boating have fed into one another within Finland’s small-boat industry.
