A response to complex small-boat wiring
Egis Mobile Electric has won a 2026 IBEX Innovation Award in the Electrical Systems category for its Modular Power Distribution Module. The judges singled out a persistent problem aboard smaller leisure boats: builders often connect switches, fuse blocks, busbars and relays as separate components, making troubleshooting and future changes harder than necessary.
The Egis PDM combines multiple functions in a sealed, ignition-protected unit. The award announcement highlights fuses, resettable circuit breakers, Deutsch connectors and NMEA 2000 control. A modular, busbar-linked arrangement allows the installer to expand the configuration without replicating a large web of individual electrical parts.
Why consolidation is useful on a small boat
Space behind a centre-console dashboard or in a cockpit locker can be very limited. Combining circuit distribution in a planned enclosure may improve access, wiring consistency and fault identification. That can be particularly attractive on outboard-powered boats where several accessories must operate reliably despite vibration, water spray and fluctuating onboard electrical loads.
The manufacturer's wider distribution catalogue includes additional modules and link busbars for different circuit requirements. However, an integrated product does not guarantee that every electrical component on a boat can be plugged in without design work. Current ratings, wire sizing, circuit protection and ignition-protection rules must all be checked carefully.
NMEA control and system planning
NMEA 2000 capability brings the possibility of integrating distribution control with compatible marine electronics. This can help builders simplify user interfaces and consolidate operating information. Yet the network should not be mistaken for a replacement for appropriate physical isolation or independent safety protection for essential circuits.
Boaters planning a refit should ask an installer to draw the existing system before removing components. It is important to preserve reliable service to bilge pumps, navigation lights, communications equipment and engine-related circuits according to their particular wiring requirements. A tidy module is only beneficial if the design continues to work safely under fault conditions.
An award with an engineering context
Egis lists the Modular PDM and related relay modules among products released in the second quarter of 2026. Its IBEX honour was one of twelve winners chosen from one hundred submitted entries, giving the product recognition within a broader programme of marine innovation. The result does not amount to a blanket approval for any conceivable electrical installation.
For owners, the practical interest is likely to emerge when a builder or technician can explain a simpler, more maintainable circuit arrangement. Installation instructions and the service network should be evaluated alongside the modules themselves. A safe electrical refit prioritises fault protection and traceable documentation before convenience.
