The model combines Cobalt's conventional dayboat comfort with dedicated surf hardware rather than treating towing as an occasional secondary use. That makes it distinct from the standard R4 while keeping the same general size class.

Forward Drive moves the propellers away from the rider

The R4 Surf uses Volvo Penta Forward Drive, which positions the propellers farther forward beneath the hull than a conventional sterndrive. That arrangement is central to making stern-facing surf activity practical on an inboard-powered bowrider.
