California Offers $1.4m for On-Water Boating Safety Training

California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways has opened applications for up to $1.4 million in Aquatic Center Grants. The programme supports organizations that provide practical, on-water recreational boating safety education to the public.

Eligible applicants include local public agencies, nonprofit organizations and colleges or universities operating in California. Applications are due by noon on 30 October 2026 through the division’s online grant system.

Funding can support boats, equipment and scholarships

The grants can be used to purchase boating equipment and supplies needed for training programmes. Funding can also support student scholarships that reduce the cost of participating in practical boating courses.

Instructor training and boating-safety events are also eligible expenses under the programme. That broad scope allows organizations to invest both in the physical equipment used on the water and in the people delivering the instruction.

Practical handling is part of the assessment

Applications are scored partly on an organization’s ability to teach safe vessel handling and improve knowledge of boating laws, weather and water conditions. The emphasis is therefore wider than classroom theory alone.

For new and developing boaters, supervised time on the water can connect rules with real manoeuvring, launching and decision-making. Programmes still need suitable instructors, risk controls and equipment appropriate to the type of craft being used.

Federal boating trust fund supplies the money

The Division of Boating and Waterways administers the programme with funding from the federal Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund managed by the US Coast Guard. California uses the grants to expand access to structured recreational-boating education across the state.
