Digital training platform prepares for launch

The British Marine Training Academy is being developed as an on-demand learning platform for the leisure-marine workforce. British Marine says it will build on its existing training provision with shorter online courses that businesses and individuals can access at their own pace.

The course plan spans technical skills, leadership, compliance, innovation and continuing professional development. An introductory Marine World course is among the first programmes planned, aimed at people entering the sector, changing careers or joining a marine business without previous industry experience.

Clegg Gifford becomes Course Partner

Clegg Gifford has worked with small and medium-sized businesses for more than 50 years and is expanding its involvement in the marine market. Its partnership is intended to support faster development of the Academy’s course portfolio while giving the insurer a role in an industry-wide skills initiative.

British Marine has already secured backing from several founding partners, including Haven Knox-Johnston Commercial, Skandinavian Agency Services, Aqueduct Marina and Bartons Solicitors. The model therefore spreads support across businesses with different specialisms rather than placing the training programme with a single sponsor.

Skills and recruitment remain industry concerns

British Marine says the Academy was created in response to demand for flexible training that can support recruitment, onboarding and career progression. Online delivery may be especially useful for smaller marine companies whose staff cannot easily leave work for multi-day classroom courses.

The platform is due to be promoted at the Southampton International Boat Show, where British Marine will have a dedicated training presence. If the course catalogue develops as planned, it could become a practical route for technicians, managers and new entrants to build marine-specific knowledge without waiting for a traditional scheduled course.
