The leisure boating industry depends on people whose skills go well beyond driving a boat. British Marine has launched a new online Training Academy intended to give new entrants a structured introduction to the businesses, roles and terminology behind the sector.
The academy was unveiled at the 2026 Southampton International Boat Show. Its online delivery is designed to make the first stage of learning easier to access for employees and career changers who cannot travel to a classroom for every introductory session.
A first course introduces the sector
The opening course, Introduction to the Marine World, is aimed at people with little or no previous industry experience. British Marine describes an approximately two-hour introduction intended to help participants understand the breadth of the marine economy.
The announced price is £99 excluding VAT for that first course. Employers may find a shared foundation useful when staff join a yard, dealership, marina or support business from a different industry.
Training can support a broader workforce
Practical boating businesses need a mix of technical, customer-facing and administrative roles. A newcomer dealing with customers will benefit from knowing the difference between types of boats, suppliers and services even when the job is not directly on the water.
Digital introductory learning does not replace hands-on qualifications or specialist safety courses. It can, however, help staff arrive at further training with a common language and a clearer understanding of the industry.
Why this matters to small-boat businesses
Smaller companies often have limited time for induction while the day-to-day work continues. An online module may be easier to fit around workshop, retail and seasonal schedules than an in-person event.
