BENETEAU has brought the Gran Turismo 40 Open into its 2026 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show programme, giving North American visitors another chance to inspect the new express-cruiser direction first revealed in Europe. The model is designed around open-air activity but introduces sleeping spaces and more adaptable shelter than a conventional sporty dayboat.

At approximately 12.3 metres overall, the Gran Turismo 40 Open occupies a useful middle ground between a smaller walkaround and a sizeable family cruiser. Its central idea is that owners should be able to move from entertaining to a short overnight voyage without rearranging the whole boat or compromising the main deck.

The builder introduced the Open version at Cannes in September alongside a new Swift Trawler 43 variant, presenting two different answers to the same question of how people now spend time afloat. Fort Lauderdale's October 28 to November 1 exhibition places the Gran Turismo beside other new models in the range.

A deck that adapts through the day

Forward, wraparound seating forms a U-shaped social area with broad views beyond the bow. A pedestal table can lower to transform the zone into a sunpad, allowing a space used for drinks and conversation to become somewhere to relax without requiring dedicated cushions to remain spread across the deck.

The aft cockpit is also intended to adapt, with an optional electrically operated table pedestal and sunpad infill. This reduces the old division between formal seating and fixed sunbathing areas, although owners must confirm exactly how quickly the changes can be made and what equipment is included in the selected specification.

A T-top creates a protected area around the helm and cockpit while keeping the wider experience open to the elements. Additional shade choices are presented as a major part of the design, because the same sheltered arrangement that feels comfortable in spring can otherwise become too exposed on a hot afternoon.

Engineering and onboard systems

BENETEAU credits naval architecture to Michael Peters Yacht Design and the exterior to Andreani Design. Those two disciplines need to work together on a boat that has both an athletic profile and enough interior volume for practical living, rather than making the hull form a purely stylistic statement.

The official specification lists a length overall of 41 feet three inches and refers to multiple deck configurations, including standard and Alpine editions. The layout pages also show alternative propulsion arrangements, so it would be unsafe to assume every boat on display has the same engines or the same installation.

An optional Seakeeper 3 gyro stabiliser aims to reduce movement at anchor. Buyers who frequently stop in exposed bays may value the system, but it should be assessed against the extra cost, weight, electrical demand and service obligations rather than treated as equipment that removes the need for good anchoring judgment.

Comfort and practical details

Below deck, BENETEAU offers spaces suited to short stays, including sleeping areas and an adaptable lower saloon. That is a useful distinction from a pure open deck boat, because a family can put belongings away and retreat from poor weather without immediately ending the day's journey.

The manufacturer also highlights Seanapps, a connected-boat service that can help an owner monitor selected systems and arrange maintenance. As with any remotely connected marine equipment, the sensible questions concern which features are active, what coverage is available in the cruising area and whether recurring charges apply.

Even a thoughtfully planned cockpit can become difficult to use when tables, fenders and children's equipment all compete for space. Prospective owners should walk the route from the bathing platform to the bow, inspect storage openings while seats are occupied and check that the helm retains all-round visibility with the preferred shade arrangement deployed.

What owners should examine

The Gran Turismo 40 Open belongs to a market in which excitement and simplicity are both promised. Onboard comfort, however, depends on details such as engine noise in the sleeping spaces, access to electrical systems and whether the boat is straightforward to clean after a saltwater outing.

Fort Lauderdale visitors can compare the Open version against the range's more enclosed alternatives and the smaller Gran Turismo 35. The important distinction is how much time the prospective owner genuinely wants to spend outside and how often a passage must be made when the weather is less than ideal.

BENETEAU's official model documentation provides a strong starting point, but buyers should verify the precise version and options with the dealer and then take a representative sea trial. The new Open model's case rests on a deck that changes naturally with each outing, rather than on a single dramatic performance figure.
