B&G and Ocean Safety have developed the Jon Buoy Smart Release, an integrated release system that can connect a vessel’s man-overboard command to the physical deployment of a Jon Buoy Mk 6 Recovery Module. The aim is to reduce the number of separate actions required during the first moments of an emergency, when locating the casualty and getting flotation into the water both matter.
On a compatible B&G installation, pressing the MOB function records the casualty position and starts navigation guidance back toward it. At the same time, the Smart Release can activate the recovery module automatically, joining the electronic MOB response and the physical deployment process through the vessel’s onboard network.
NMEA 2000 provides the link between electronics and release
Ocean Safety describes the Smart Release as NMEA 2000 compatible, allowing activation from suitable positions connected to the vessel’s system. The unit can also be operated remotely, giving installers flexibility over where the control point is placed rather than restricting release to the recovery module itself.
The product operates from 12V or 24V ship’s power and is supplied with a 10-metre cable between the release plunger and control box. Extension cables can increase the run to a stated maximum of 50 metres, which is useful on boats where the electronics and recovery equipment are separated by cockpit, deck or cabin layout.
Automatic deployment is intended to shorten the first response
The key distinction is that a single MOB action can initiate both navigation and equipment deployment. B&G says the chartplotter records the position and begins guiding the vessel back while the Jon Buoy unit is released, helping reduce the risk that a crew under stress marks the position but delays launching recovery equipment.
Automation does not remove the need for crew training, watchkeeping or a practised recovery procedure. Owners still need to understand their equipment, follow the manufacturer’s installation and servicing instructions, and make sure every regular crew member knows what happens when the MOB function is activated.
Smart Release is serviced with the Mk 6 recovery module
Ocean Safety specifies that the release should be inspected in conjunction with servicing of the Jon Buoy Mk 6 Recovery Module hardcase product. The Smart Release is a single-use emergency device after activation, while an inline connector allows the plunger box and recovery module to be disconnected from the vessel for servicing.
The system carries a two-year warranty and Ocean Safety currently lists it as a forthcoming trade product. Owners considering it should confirm chartplotter and NMEA 2000 compatibility, installation requirements and servicing arrangements with an authorised supplier before specifying the system.
