Three engine ratings on one touring concept

Sea-Doo’s 2027 GTX touring range has an unusually straightforward choice at its centre: three variants with 170hp, 230hp and 300hp Rotax engines. They share an emphasis on a comfortable three-rider platform and rear-deck practicality, but their different power outputs and prices make them suitable for different owners. It is a more useful comparison than simply asking which personal watercraft in the wider market has the most horsepower.

BRP quotes US starting prices of $18,149 for the GTX 170, $19,149 for the GTX 230 and $20,849 for the GTX 300, all before transportation and preparation charges. The difference between the 170 and 230 is therefore relatively modest in the advertised figures, but a final buying decision should also consider insurance, expected fuel use, service costs and the actual equipment offered by the supplying dealer.

The common hull and its everyday dimensions

All three versions use the fiberglass ST3 hull, measure 135.8 inches or 345cm in length and have a width of 49.2 inches or 125cm. BRP lists three-rider capacity, an 18.5-US-gallon or 70-litre fuel tank, and a total storage volume of 26.1 US gallons or 98.9 litres. The consistency makes the power comparison more meaningful, because the buyer is not simultaneously changing the broad physical dimensions.

Dry weights do vary with the equipment and engine specification. Sea-Doo lists 796lb or 361kg for the GTX 170, 829lb or 376kg for the GTX 230 and 848lb or 385kg for the GTX 300. Those are dry figures, so the weight of fuel, passengers, equipment and trailer must be added when checking a tow vehicle’s capability and the safety of a launch arrangement.

170hp for measured recreational touring

The GTX 170 is presented as a comfortable go-anywhere touring PWC with a substantial platform, a 10.25-inch touchscreen and equipment supporting ordinary day trips. Its 170hp output may appeal to riders who value a relaxed pace with an occasional guest rather than rapid acceleration. Choosing the least powerful variant in a three-model family is not necessarily a compromise if its character fits how the craft will actually be used.

Sea-Doo lists features including LinQ accessory points and the iDF debris-management system in its description of the GTX 170. Buyers should still check the exact package, especially when a dealer is presenting a particular colour or technology configuration. The right questions concern handling with passengers, convenient boarding, storage access and the clarity of controls under normal conditions.

Where 230hp and 300hp enter the picture

The GTX 230 adds a supercharged 230hp output and is marketed as a more energetic touring option, while preserving the shared hull and principal dimensions. For a rider frequently carrying passengers, that reserve may be attractive, but acceleration must still be managed carefully and never used as a substitute for safe handling. Fuel consumption and range are not directly determined by a horsepower figure.

The GTX 300 moves higher again, with the manufacturer quoting 300hp and describing additional performance potential without abandoning the touring platform. Owners considering it should ask whether they will regularly use that capability in suitable open water. Those who mostly operate in harbour approaches or around crowded beaches may receive more daily benefit from good seating and equipment than from the additional engine rating.

A reasoned choice is more than horsepower

The 2027 GTX range illustrates how boat-buying logic also applies to personal watercraft. Hull suitability, intended routes, passenger comfort, available storage and towing arrangements all deserve a place in the decision. The manufacturer specifies a one-year limited warranty for each current GTX model, with terms dependent on the market and normal warranty conditions.

An ideal comparison includes a dealer inspection and, where possible, a supervised demonstration of more than one engine. Purchasers should calculate the whole ownership cost, including trailer, maintenance, flotation devices and insurance, before selecting a model. A sensible GTX choice is the version that suits actual outings and rider experience, not simply the most impressive performance number in the brochure.
