The 20 VTX remains Malibu’s compact crossover

At 20 feet long with a 98-inch beam, the VTX sits at the smaller end of Malibu’s range and is intended for owners who want one boat to handle slalom skiing, wakesurfing, wakeboarding and general family use. Malibu lists an approximate dry weight of 3,950lb, which also keeps trailering more manageable than with the company’s larger wakeboats.

That compact size is particularly useful on smaller lakes, tighter ramps and home-storage setups where a 23- or 26-foot towboat can become difficult to manage. Owners still need to match the trailer, tow vehicle and launch facilities carefully, but the VTX starts from a more practical footprint.

A T-Cut Diamond hull gives skiing equal billing

The 20 VTX uses Malibu’s T-Cut Diamond hull and is AWSA certified for private-lake skiing. That distinguishes it from wakeboats designed almost entirely around producing large surf waves, because the hull is also intended to create flatter, more usable slalom wakes at skiing speeds.

When the day shifts to surfing or wakeboarding, Malibu’s Surf Gate and ballast systems change the water behind the boat rather than requiring owners to choose a different hull. For mixed-sport families, that flexibility can be more valuable than maximising performance in only one discipline.

Ballast reaches 3,585lb in a six-metre boat

Malibu quotes a maximum factory ballast capacity of 3,585lb, or about 1,626kg, for the 20 VTX. Combined with the wake-shaping hardware, that allows a relatively compact boat to generate larger riding waves when required while returning to a lighter setup for cruising or skiing.

Ballast capacity should still be considered alongside passenger load, fuel and local operating conditions. Owners need to understand how additional weight affects draft, acceleration, fuel use and handling, particularly on smaller inland waters or when the boat is carrying a full crew.

2027 updates focus on easier day-to-day use

Across the 2027 Malibu range, Dry Ride Thru-Hull ballast becomes standard and new features include factory-set Foil Presets, an upgraded MaxPivot seat, optional remote battery control and expanded RGB lighting choices. The 20 VTX benefits from those wider model-year changes while retaining its core crossover identity.

For Leisure Boat Guide readers, the appeal is straightforward: the VTX offers premium wakeboat technology without requiring the length and storage footprint of a flagship model. Its strongest argument is versatility, especially for families that want to ski in the morning, surf later and still use the boat for ordinary lake cruising.
