Start with an honest packing list

Four paddlers can bring substantial gear, but duplicated cooking equipment and heavy bags reduce working space. Separate personal dry bags from shared shelter, first-aid kit and food, then place the heaviest items to maintain suitable trim.

The actual boat’s load rating must govern what goes aboard. Empty hull weight does not establish the remaining allowance once paddlers and provisions are included.

Give each person a role

A group can decide who reads the map, manages the shore stops and checks everyone has flotation and water. A clear plan avoids the assumption that the stern paddler must handle every decision.

A long canoe needs more room for turning and landing than a compact solo craft. The chosen route should reflect the experience of the entire group rather than the strongest paddler.

Choose legal camping access

A campsite with a recognised landing, permitted overnight use and a nearby fallback is preferable to a remote beach selected only from a photograph. Food and waste storage need to follow local requirements.

Weather can delay progress, so reserve enough daylight to land and set up. A rough open crossing should be postponed rather than treating the booking as a deadline.

Make the return a group task

Landing, unloading and carrying a long canoe safely require coordination. Give everyone time to recover and check the hull after the trip.
