A hull with room for kit
Wenonah lists the Boundary Waters at 5.18 metres with a maximum width of 92.71 centimetres. The design has fuller middle sections for capacity, a moderate rocker and relatively low bow and stern heights to reduce wind exposure.
The maker’s construction choices range from heavier Tuf-Weave to lighter aramid, and the representative weights differ. A family should select a build it can launch and recover without strain.
Packing for the people aboard
Dry bags for spare layers, food and sleep equipment need to be secured without preventing an emergency exit. Load should be distributed so the canoe sits predictably, with frequently used items kept reachable.
A roomy hull is not an invitation to pack everything available. Manufacturer limits, crew skill and expected water conditions are all part of a sensible plan.
Make the first night simple
A sheltered lake with a nearby authorised campsite is more manageable for a first trip than an unfamiliar chain of rivers. A short route also leaves time for children to help with camp tasks rather than spending an entire day paddling.
