Welsh Sailing’s Youth LAB has brought eight participants aged 16–23 into discussions about events and future activity, giving young members a direct way to share ideas.
Young sailors know what helps them stay involved, from the atmosphere at a club to practical barriers to attending events. Welsh Sailing has created a Youth LAB to bring those experiences into planning for the sport.
The forum began in early 2026 and recruited eight participants from across Wales. They represent different ages and interests within the stated sixteen-to-twenty-three range.
A working group rather than a one-off survey
Members have taken part in an online meeting and continued conversation through a dedicated group channel. This gives them a chance to respond to ideas and develop suggestions together.
The initiative includes involvement in discussions and decisions. Its effectiveness will depend on how future programmes take account of that feedback.
Young people understand their own barriers
Travel, cost, time and confidence can influence whether a sailor returns to an activity. Hearing directly from participants can reveal problems that a committee might otherwise overlook.
The group does not replace clubs and coaches; it adds another route for communication. Collaboration matters when turning ideas into a workable event or programme.
Leadership begins with participation
Contributing to meetings can help young people develop confidence in representing others. Those skills may lead to volunteering and other responsibilities within the sailing community.
