Sport Wales funding has helped Welsh Sailing add a 29er, a 420 and six RS Feva dinghies to its youth and junior programme, widening access to two-person training and competition.
A young sailor can progress quickly until the next step requires a different boat the family cannot easily buy. Welsh Sailing is addressing part of that problem with eight new double-handed dinghies supported by Sport Wales funding.
The purchase includes a 29er, a 420 and six RS Fevas, along with transport equipment. It is intended to support both advanced pathway sailors and more accessible junior opportunities.
Different boats serve different stages
The 29er and 420 are to be available on loan for higher-level youth sailors. The RS Feva fleet will support training sessions, events and a route into team racing.
These classes offer distinct levels of handling and performance. Making suitable boats available through a programme can allow young people to develop without an immediate family purchase.
The investment includes transport
Sport Wales provided £68,284 towards a reported total project cost of £75,784. The plan includes two triple-stacker road trailers as well as road trailers for the youth boats.
Road transport is easily overlooked when a fleet is assembled, but it determines which venues and regattas the equipment can reach. Clubs also need storage, maintenance and competent people to keep the boats in use.
Access grows through organised programmes
Shared equipment becomes valuable when young sailors can actually book it and receive coaching. Welsh Sailing describes the Fevas as a resource for wider participation as well as competition.
