Welsh Sailing has recognised Sharon and Graham Davidson-Guild for supporting youth racing with work on the water and ashore, including courses, registration and results.
A youth regatta only runs smoothly when someone has prepared the course and another person can manage the results. Sharon and Graham Davidson-Guild have received a Welsh Sailing Impact Award for years of work supporting young sailors.
The couple began volunteering while their own children were involved in training and competition. They continued helping the sport beyond their immediate family’s participation.
Two different roles support one event
Graham helps with mark laying while Sharon contributes to registration, results and race-office work. The tasks are distinct but both are essential to the experience of the sailors.
A carefully laid course provides a fair setting for racing, while clear administration prevents confusion ashore. Competitors may notice these details only when something is missing.
The value continues across seasons
Returning volunteers hold knowledge about the venue and event procedures that can help others learn. They can also offer reassurance to new parents and young people attending an unfamiliar regatta.
