Two weekends for an advanced teaching role
South Cerney Sailing Club in Gloucestershire is hosting a four-day RYA Senior Dinghy Instructor course over 24–25 October and 7–8 November 2026. Unlike an informal instructor-development day, this is an assessed course intended to help qualified instructors take responsibility for a wider teaching programme. It builds on previous experience gained delivering ordinary dinghy lessons.
The published syllabus covers the Senior Instructor's role, preparation and delivery of activities, course and centre management, powerboat handling within instruction and the RYA Sailing Schemes. Such work demands a combination of practical seamanship, planning and the ability to support other instructors when an activity becomes difficult.
Managing several learners and boats
A group sailing session demands attention to weather, equipment, instructor allocation and differing ability levels. The organiser says candidates will be assessed continuously, including through simulated group-management activities on the water. This allows assessment of how a person responds to practical scenarios rather than only testing their memory in a classroom.
Senior instructors may be expected to maintain consistency when several teaching boats are launched simultaneously. They also need to decide when a planned exercise is unsuitable for the conditions. Making a safe adjustment can demonstrate competent management, even if it means changing an activity that was originally advertised.
What prospective candidates should establish
This is not an entry-level sailing course. Applicants should contact the RYA or course provider to verify required certificates, experience, first-aid credentials and evidence needed before attendance. Someone missing a prerequisite should not assume that booking and a few days on the water will automatically make them eligible for a senior appointment.
Preparation can include reviewing teaching exercises, emergency briefings and how multiple learners are monitored. Instructors who have taught only very small groups may benefit from discussing the responsibilities of centre-level leadership with an experienced mentor. Time between the October and November weekends can be useful for reflection.
A wider benefit to sailing clubs
When more members can assume senior teaching responsibilities, a club may become less dependent on one longstanding volunteer. This supports continuity and helps newly qualified instructors receive constructive advice. The skill is also relevant when sessions must be rearranged because of wind or equipment problems.
The South Cerney course is scheduled for late October and early November, with qualification dependent on meeting the relevant requirements. Families selecting a training centre may not see this work directly, but experienced senior instructors form an important part of safe, enjoyable small-boat education. A sensible candidate will also consider the time required for preparation and the way assessment relates to everyday club teaching. The value of the qualification comes from using the skills consistently rather than simply displaying the certificate.
