Northern Ireland Sailability Open Series Connects Four Inclusive Regattas

The Sailability Open Series returned to Northern Ireland in 2026 with a programme of four regattas at Carrickfergus, Lough Erne and Greencastle. The RYA's May announcement stressed that participants of different abilities and levels of sailing experience were welcome, reflecting an event design that values friendship and confidence as well as formal results.

Four events with participation at their centre

The Sailability Open Series returned to Northern Ireland in 2026 with a programme of four regattas at Carrickfergus, Lough Erne and Greencastle. The RYA's May announcement stressed that participants of different abilities and levels of sailing experience were welcome, reflecting an event design that values friendship and confidence as well as formal results.

The planned calendar began with Belfast Lough Sailability at Carrickfergus Sailing Club on 30 May. Lough Erne Yacht Club hosted a John McCrea Fun Day on 18 July and a Sailability Regatta the following day, before the Foyle event at Greencastle Marina on 8 August. Those are dates from the published 2026 schedule, not invitations to attend an event still in the future.

A sailing introduction without race pressure

The organisers also promoted Wednesday evening introductory sessions at Carrickfergus Sailing Club, starting at 6:30pm. They were designed for people who wanted to understand whether sailing suited them without an obligation to join a competition. Similar enquiries could be made for opportunities around Foyle and Lough Erne through the RYA Sailability team.

For many participants, the first barrier is not learning to steer but reaching the boat, understanding what support is available and feeling comfortable asking questions. A carefully organised introductory session helps address those uncertainties. Visitors should be able to discuss access requirements, assistance and suitable clothing before making the trip.

Clubs create practical inclusion

Inclusive sailing requires more than encouraging words. Boats, pontoons, lifting arrangements, changing facilities, suitably trained volunteers and emergency plans must work together. A site that is accessible for one participant may not be appropriate for every disability, so detailed communication with the host club is essential.

A regatta can also be a welcoming social gathering for family and friends. The opportunity to share a meal, watch others sailing and celebrate individual progress may be as significant as finishing a course. The RYA presents the Open Series as a place where people connect through the pleasure of being afloat.

The importance of repeated opportunities

An occasional open day can introduce someone to sailing, but a series of local gatherings offers a reason to return and build relationships. As confidence grows, a sailor may become interested in more independent participation, coaching or racing. The correct pace is personal, and there is no need to measure every experience by competition results.

The 2026 schedule illustrates how several local organisations can collaborate while retaining their individual character. For Leisure Boat Guide readers, it offers a model of accessible small-boat participation that places the needs of people and families at the centre of the activity. Current session dates should always be confirmed with the clubs themselves.
