Welsh youth sailors finished in the top ten at the 2026 29er and 420 worlds, reflecting progress through the national performance pathway.
Results across two classes
Welsh crews achieved top-ten results in international 29er and 420 championships during July 2026. Jac Bailey and Ben Sinfield finished sixth in the 29er Worlds, with Ben Greenhalgh and Tom Sinfield ninth.
Merle Nieuwland, sailing with Neil Marsden, was sixth overall in the 420 fleet and third among mixed teams. These are results for two distinct international regattas.
A competitive fleet
The 29er Worlds in Kiel, Germany, had more than 270 entries, according to Welsh Sailing. The scale of the event made strong fleet positioning a significant outcome for the crews involved.
The 420 championship took place in Biscarrosse, France. Conditions and competitors were different, so finishing places from the two classes are not directly comparable.
Support behind the sailors
The named sailors have been involved in Welsh Sailing performance squads and have benefited from equipment supported by Sport Wales. Access to suitable boats and kit can help athletes continue training and competing.
Funding and coaching form part of a wider pathway that also depends on the sailors’ commitment. A strong championship result does not by itself guarantee later team selection.
