The inaugural Welsh Club Championships gathered sailors from 13 clubs in Pembrokeshire for racing and foiling tasters.
A new youth event in Pembrokeshire
More than seventy young sailors from thirteen Welsh clubs attended the first Welsh Club Championships at Dale on 20–21 June 2026. Welsh Sailing combined fleet racing with a social programme for families.
The event created a meeting place for participants from different clubs. The reported numbers describe this inaugural edition rather than a standing annual attendance figure.
Making the most of the weather
The main fleet completed six races on Saturday and the regatta fleet five, ahead of a forecast quieter Sunday. A south-easterly breeze supported the opening day’s racing.
Weather shaped the schedule as it does at any dinghy event. A skipper cannot assume the same conditions during a later visit to the location.
Trying a different boat
Around twenty sailors tried a 29er skiff, a foiling WASZP or both through organised taster activities. Coaches supported the sessions, allowing participants to explore a class outside their usual fleet.
Foiling and skiff handling require a suitable learning environment and safety kit. An introductory session is a first experience, not proof of independent competence.
The club community ashore
Food, volunteer recognition and informal gathering formed part of the weekend alongside racing. Families and officials help make participation possible across several clubs.
