Scotland’s west coast hosted Optimist youth racing and foiling competition during August, offering two very different on-water experiences.
Two events on one coast
The west of Scotland hosted the UK Optimist Nationals at Largs and a programme of foiling and windsurfing at Stranraer in August 2026. The RYA reported the events together as examples of the region’s competitive sailing.
They involved different classes and age groups rather than one unified regatta. Each venue has its own sailing conditions and club network.
Young racers gather at Largs
Largs Sailing Club welcomed 163 sailors to the Optimist championship, with 111 in the main fleet. Coached regatta fleets also took part across the event.
The format allowed developing sailors to participate alongside an established national competition. Winds and tidal effects changed through the week.
Another generation of equipment
Stranraer’s programme showcased foiling and windsurfing activity, adding a contrasting high-speed discipline to the regional calendar. Such events can introduce families to what is possible beyond conventional dinghies.
Foiling equipment requires appropriate training and protective kit. Experience in one class is not proof of competency in another.
A place for families and supporters
The events also brought volunteers and visitors to local waterside communities. Club support forms part of the experience for young sailors who travel to compete.
